January 30th, 2012 ~ Today, DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz blasted her RNC counterpart, Reince Priebus for comparing our President to Francesco Schettino, the captain of the tragic Costa Concordia cruise ship where so many have died. What she didn't mention is the water Reince Priebus' own ship seems to be taking on in the investigation of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.
Personally, I would LOVE to see this asshole do a "perp walk" along with his pal Walker.  Reince Priebus.  Doesn't that sound like some sort of STD?  What planet is that from?  Uranus?

      January 29th, 2012 ~ I Vote...

...to elect a President and legislators who will provide TRUE American energy independence from oil and natural gas through new energy and transport technologies.  I vote to tell the American Petroleum Institute to shove their tar sands pipeline, their toxic fracking operations, and their propaganda campaign up their collective ass.  That's where bullshit belongs.

January 5th, 2012 ~ When I was 13, I was an adamant proponent of a national "flat tax".  At 14, I embraced a national sales tax to replace our income-based taxation system altogether.  That was nearly 50 years ago.  Since then, I have grown to realize that both a flat income tax as well as a national sales tax would be punishing for most Americans while being unfairly insignificant for the small number of wealthy Americans.  The key issue is the percentage of "must spend" income relative to taxes.
Let's say you have a flat tax or a national sales tax of 10%.  If you're earning $40K per year, that's $4,000 out of your pocket leaving you $36,000 or $3,000 per month to support your family.  Not much if you need to pay on a mortgage, feed your family, provide medical care, etc.  Some might argue that with a sales tax, one could choose to forestall some purchases and thereby save on taxes.  This is a hypocritical and disingenuous argument when a family MUST spend all their income just to survive.
Contrast that with a multi-billionaire like presidential aspirant, Mitt Romney.  Since Mittens won't publicly disclose his tax returns, I'll just have to make a SWAG here of $40 Million income per year.  A 10% flat income tax would yield $4 Million in taxes per year.  A lot of money to be sure, but that still leaves Mitt and his family with $36 Million or $3 Million per month to "cover expenses".  YOU might be able to blow through $3 MILLION per month (God knows how), but even if I had a family of 20, renting an entire floor of the Plaza Hotel in NYC, and eating caviar and Chateaubriand every day, I doubt I could spend that kind of cash every month.
And that's your first clue as to the cynical nature of the game Romney and his fellow GOP presidential contenders are playing with their tax proposals.  NONE of them can spend all the money they make.  So, they just feed a goodly chunk back into their money making machines to become even wealthier.  That makes their advocacy for a national sales tax even more unfair.  Since our hypothetical Romney can't spend all of $3.3 Million per month (in a sales-tax-only scenario), he would NEVER be paying 10% of his income in taxes.  You and I and most other Americans who NEED to spend most if not all our income, however, would.
So, while Herman Cain's "9-9-9 Plan" and similar proposals might initially appeal to an 8th Grader, adults recognize the need for a graduated or "progressive" income tax as the only truly fair taxation system.  The only question is how we reform our federal tax system to be as fair as possible.
Certainly we must do away with the separate capital gains taxation system with its 15% max rate.  EVERY person (including the corporate undead), earning income within the U.S. and its territories should be taxed according to ONE, progressive system.
Next, let's look at JOBS.  GOP meat puppets LOVE to talk about the "job creators", so our tax system should reward companies which hire American workers (not foreign H1-B visa holders), full-time, with benefits, for at least a full year.  While this is obviously a good old-fashioned "loophole", if implemented with intelligent regulation, we could see a boom in federal revenues from all those newly hired taxpayers to offset the stagnant economy championed by GOP Senators and Representatives who hold their pledges of loyalty to Grover Norquist in higher regard than their pledges to the American People.
How else can our tax code serve the American People for a change?  Can we employ our tax system to break the shackles of BIG ENERGY?  Can we leverage our tax system to make BIG BANKING, BIG INSURANCE, and BIG PHARMA just a bit less greedy?  Could We, The People, actually craft a Federal income tax system which makes wars of neocon ideology extremely difficult, yet which provides for a robust strategic manufacturing base should our nation be truly threatened?  Feel free to email me with your thoughts on the matter.
